Iowa starts back-to-back at Mavericks

Independence, MO – The Iowa Heartlanders, proud ECHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild and Iowa Wild, are back at it in the Kansas City suburbs to oppose the Mavericks Friday at 7:05 p.m.Iowa has faced the Mavericks four times since Dec. 21, all at Cable Dahmer Arena. This weekend marks the sixth and seventh road games against KC already this regular season. Iowa has played the Mavericks six times this season, but just once at home (5-3 Landers win).Wednesday, Nolan Orzeck scored for Iowa in a 3-1 loss. Corbin Kaczperski blocked 31 shots.Kansas City has had the week to prepare for the Heartlanders and last played at Allen and won, 8-1, Jan. 8. Sitting at 14-12-4-0, the Mavs are fourth in the Central Division with 32 points. Ten of the team’s 14 wins are at home (10-2-4-0 home record).Broadcast Coverage: Watch online at flohockey.tv. Nolan Orzeck scored about five minutes into the second to even the game at one, but the Fuel responded a minute later with the eventual game-winning goal by Carson Rose. Next, less than two minutes later, Cameron Hillis knocked in his tenth of the season. Zach Driscoll made eight saves in the third and won with 20 saves.Season SeriesIowa is seeking their first win of the season at Cable Dahmer Arena. The last Landers win at Kansas City came March 2022 in a 6-1 victory.  This season, the Mavericks have taken five of the first six season-series meetings. Alec Broetzman leads active Landers with three goals and five points; he scored in the team’s last meeting on New Year’s Eve at KC.  Michael Pastujov and James Sanchez also have two goals in the series.Kansas City’s Jeremy McKenna is best in the series with five goals and seven points. He has the game-winning goal in each of the last three games he’s played against Iowa (Dec. 21, Dec. 30 and Dec. 31).Shane Starrett is 4-0-0-0 against Iowa (5 GA). Trevin Kozlowski has Iowa’s only win against Kansas City, allowing one goal in relief on Nov. 30.Friday night lights The Heartlanders are looking for their first Friday win of the regular season, a strange streak given Iowa has normally been solid to finish weeks. In 2022-23, Iowa has at least a point in seven of ten games when playing for the second day in a row, including a 3-1-0-0 record at Xtream Arena.
