Brinkman's overtime winner seals 3-2 win over Nailers

Coralville, Iowa – The Iowa Heartlanders opened the week with a come-from-behind, overtime win, 3-2, against the Wheeling Nailers Wednesday at Xtream Arena. Ben Brinkman scored his first career overtime goal at 3:50 of the extra session to power Iowa to its 23rd victory of the season.

On the overtime-winning goal, Wheeling jumped two players ahead around the goal line and Brinkman intercepted the puck. He took it coast-to-coast, toe-dragged the lone defender, and shot it low and past Taylor Gauthier (OTL, 29 saves).

Peyton Jones earned his first series win over Wheeling with 34 saves.

Iowa is 2-3-0-0 against Wheeling in the season series and the teams play twice more this week.

The Nailers struck first with a goal by Justin Lee five minutes into the opening frame, assisted by Matthew Quercia.

Iowa’s Evan Boucher tied the game at one, registering his first goal with the Heartlanders at 14:22, bouncing the puck past Gauthier off of a redirect from Pavel Novak.

The second period started with a bang, as 19 seconds in Nico Blachman dropped the gloves with Quercia. Dakota Raabe followed by fighting Peter Laviolette before play could continue. Both Raabe and Laviolette were given a misconduct for the secondary altercation and were ejected.

Rejuvenated by the fight, Kyle Masters took the lead for the Heartlanders, 2-1, at 8:26, cranking it home on a two-on-one. Jonny Sorenson notched his first professional career point with an assist. At 16:16 of the second, Tanner Laderoute cashed in on the final seconds of the power play to tie the game at two. Matt Koopman and Jordan Martel received assists.

Despite a scoreless third period, the Heartlanders maintained the momentum with 11 shots to bring their total shots to 29. Wheeling added 12 shots to bring their total shots to 34.
