Heartlanders start final weekend

Coralville, Iowa – The Iowa Heartlanders, proud ECHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild and Iowa Wild, have two games to go in the 2023-24 ECHL regular season and match the Kalamazoo Wings Friday at 6:35 p.m.

The team is looking for good feelings going into the offseason; Iowa sits at 60 points and still has a chance to match the most home wins in a season in team history (15).

Wednesday, the Wings took advantage of Iowa with three first period goals and won, 6-2. Hunter Vorva blocked 36 shots. Iowa scored on their first shot of the second period (Pavel Novak) and their last shot of the game (Ethan Burroughs).

Iowa is 6-2-1-1 in the season series (6 wins, 4 losses).

Here is the Central Division outlook heading into the final weekend of the season. Wheeling is in third place at 79 points and has two games to go in the season. Kalamazoo (2 games remaining) has 77 points and owns the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central Division. Fort Wayne is at 76 points, one point out of the playoffs, but controls their own destiny with three games left in their season.

Need to know

Roster move round up

The Heartlanders have had a handful of roster moves in the final week of the season. Thursday, goaltender Peyton Jones earned an AHL PTO with the Iowa Wild for the second time in April. He will finish the regular season as Iowa’s leader in wins (12). The Heartlanders then signed goaltender Brendahn Brawley.

Wednesday, Iowa the Heartlanders signed rookie forward Ethan Burroughs; he scored in his professional debut that day. He tallied 31 goals and 76 points in 68 games this season.

There has been greater roster consistency this season with the team; 48 players have skated in at least a game for the Heartlanders, compared to 63 in 2022-23.

Season Series

The Heartlanders have more wins against the Wings than any opponent this season, defeating Kalamazoo six times in ten games.

Six of the games have been decided by exactly one goal and Iowa is 4-0-1-1 in those six contests.

Prior to this week, the clubs last played Feb. 7, meaning nine of Iowa’s opening 44 games came against Kalamazoo.

Yuki Miura and Louis Boudon each have seven points against the Wings to lead all Heartlanders. K-Wings forward Erik Bradford registered three assists Wednesday and tops all players with 12 points (10a).
