Coralville, Iowa – The Iowa Heartlanders (6-3-1-0, 13 points) play their final home game of the weekend against the Wichita Thunder (6-5-1-0, 13 points) Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Saturday is Hard Hats on Ice Night, pres. by Built By Pros and Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades Council. The night featuring tributes and special recognitions for the dedicated workers who are truly the backbone of eastern Iowa. 

 

This is the second of three straight games for Iowa this weekend; Iowa is on the road Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Bloomington.

 

Friday, Iowa won their third straight game, defeating the Thunder, 4-2. Matthew Sop scored his third game-winning goal. The Heartlanders never trailed and scored twice in the third. Samuel Hlavaj won his second straight game, blocking 34 shots.

The Heartlanders are 6-6-2-1 all time against the Thunder. 

 

Last year, Iowa went 3-5-0-0 through eight games played against Wichita. The first five games of the series went Wichita’s way, before Iowa earned their third-ever three-game home sweep in March.

 

When facing Wichita at home, Iowa is 6-2-1-1.

 

Season series preview

Iowa faces Wichita six times this season, three at home and three on the road.

 

Their next meetings will be on the road with games on Friday, Jan. 3, Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5.

 

The Thunder will be back at Xtream Arena on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 3:00 p.m.

 

Returning players on both teams 

The Thunder had 16 players returning from last year on their roster at the beginning of November.

 

Most notably for Wichita, Michal Stinil led the team in goals with 32 last year. Stinil leads the league in goals this season. Additionally, veteran Jay Dickman posted a career-high 69 points in 2023-24.

 

Ten players from last year’s roster have returned to Iowa this season.
