Heartlanders and Walleye wrap up busy weekend

Toledo, OH – The Iowa Heartlanders (22-12-4-2, 50 points) complete a three-in-three at the Toledo Walleye (25-10-6-0, 56 points) Sunday at 4:15 p.m. Sunday is the final game of the week for both teams; each enjoys the next few days off after returning for home games next Friday. Iowa hosts Kalamazoo next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, while the Walleye have two home games next weekend as part of a three-in-three.

Saturday, the Heartlanders overcame a 2-0 deficit to win in overtime, 4-3. Jules Boscq scored his second overtime-winning goal of the season. Will Calverley scored twice to tie the game at two.

The Heartlanders are ranked second in the Central Division and Toledo is first in the Central Division.

Calverley multi-goal game

Will Calverley scored his second career multi-goal game Saturday at Toledo and the Heartlanders rallied for an overtime win.

Another 3-in-3 comes to a close

The Heartlanders are completing their fifth straight 3-in-3 Sunday vs. Toledo. In the back end of the three-in-three, Iowa is 2-1-0-1 over this busy stretch. Last Sunday, the Heartlanders took Tahoe to overtime in a 3-2 defeat, earning a key standings point. Prior to that, Iowa bested Indy by a goal and dominated Wichita, 5-1, Jan. 5.

The Heartlanders have another three-in-three next week at home against Kalamazoo, their sixth straight. The Heartlanders have five more three-in-threes left after next week’s series against the Wings.

Divisional hockey

The Heartlanders are in the midst of 20 straight games against the Central Division, a stretch that started Friday at Cincinnati. Of the 20 games, seven are at Xtream Arena.

The Heartlanders oppose Kalamazoo six times, Toledo five times and Cincinnati four times in the 20 games. Interestingly, after that stretch, Iowa has 14 games left and seven are against out-of-division foes Rapid City, Wichita and Norfolk.

Toledo is in the middle of 17 straight games outside the Central Division and the Walleye play 19 contests outside the division this season. They have out-of-division games left against Wheeling, Atlanta, Wichita and Florida.
