Coralville, Iowa - The Iowa Heartlanders (21-11-3-2, 47 points) take on the Tahoe Knight Monsters (23-11-2-1, 49 points) for the third time in as many days on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3:00 p.m. Iowa and Tahoe have split the season series so far, taking one game each. The Heartlanders had a six-game winning streak snapped Saturday, but picked up a point in the shootout.
In their first matchup of the weekend, Iowa scored a season-high seven goals in a 7-3 victory. Jonny Sorenson recorded his first career hat trick and T.J. Walsh picked up three assists.
Saturday, the Heartlanders fell, 1-0, to the Knight Monsters in the shootout. Kyle McClellan stopped all 25 shots faced and denied three more in a five-round shootout.
The Heartlanders are tied for second in the Central Division and the Knight Monsters are first in the Mountain Division.

Shootouts for Iowa
The Heartlanders have gone to the shootout four times this season, splitting wins and losses with two of each, tying for the most shootouts in a single season (2023-24).
Saturday was Iowa’s first shootout at home this season. It was the first time in team history the Heartlanders were scoreless through 67 minutes and needed a shootout to decide the game.
Iowa won their first shootout this year, 5-4, at Bloomington on Oct. 26. The Heartlanders dropped their next shootout against Toledo on Dec. 27, 4-3. Iowa won in Wichita after ten rounds in the shootout on Jan. 4, 2-1.
Coach’s Comparison
Derek Damon is in his third year behind the bench for the Heartlanders. He started his coaching career in 2020 as assistant coach of the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in the BCHL. He joined as Heartlanders’ assistant coach in the inaugural 2021-22 season and was promoted to Head Coach and General Manger the following year. Last year, Iowa went 27-37-6-2 for 62 points. This year, the Heartlanders are 21-11-3-2 for 47 points in the standings.
Knight Monsters Head Coach Alex Loh has been working in the ECHL since 2015. He came to Tahoe from the Savannah Ghost Pirates, where he served as assistant coach since the 2022-23 season and was promoted to interim head coach in February of 2024. Before that, Loh worked in various roles with the Adirondack Thunder. This year, Tahoe is 23-11-2-1 through the first half of their inaugural season.
