Coralville, Iowa – Down 6-4 with eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Iowa Heartlanders scored twice in a wacky back-and-forth game to force overtime, but the Kalamazoo Wings won it in the shootout, 7-6, Friday at Xtream Arena. Josh Bloom scored the only shootout goal to win the skills competition.
Yuki Miura scored twice to tie a career high, starting the late third-period comeback. Kyle Masters tied the game at six with 3:34 remaining. The Heartlanders overcame a 5-2 deficit.
With the point earned in the shootout, the Heartlanders have points in their last eight home games, tying a team record set earlier this season.
William Rousseau made 27 saves and denied two of three shots faced in the shootout. Jonathan Lemieux replaced Ty Young in the third period and Lemieux won with eight saves. Iowa out shot Kalamazoo, 45-34.
In the second period, the Wings scored five goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Three of those goals came short-handed.
Dakota Raabe opened the scoring, tipping in a shot from Zach Dubinsky with four minutes to go in the first. Will Calverley added to the lead two minutes later with a shot off a rebound in front of the net.
Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against Kalamazoo is Women in Sports Night, presented by the Iowa City Area Sports Commission. The Heartlanders host the Wings Sunday at 3:00 p.m.; join the team on the ice for a postgame skate, pres. by the Family Dental Center.
