Heartlanders visit Wings, continue busy season series

Kalamazoo, MI – The Iowa Heartlanders (24-14-4-3, 55 points) visit the Kalamazoo Wings (16-23-1-1, 34 points) Friday at 6:00 p.m. Iowa has played three of their last four games against Kalamazoo, part of a week-plus stretch where the teams play five times.

The Heartlanders have won back-to-back games, including a 2-0 shutout victory at Cincinnati Wednesday. Matt Sop and Gavin Hain combined early to score the first and game-winning goal of the game. Kyle McClellan stopped 25 shots for his second shutout of the season. Sop was recalled to the AHL’s Iowa Wild following the win.

Kalamazoo last played on Sunday against Iowa and fell, 4-1, in the afternoon matchup after winning the previous two games of the weekend series vs. the Heartlanders.

The Heartlanders are second in the Central Division and the Kalamazoo Wings are seventh in the Central Division.

Season Series

The Heartlanders are 2-1-0-1 against Kalamazoo this year. The first four games of the eight-game series were at Xtream Arena. The next four are at Wings Event Center.

 

Iowa won the first game of the series, 4-3 on Jan. 10.  Zach Dubinsky and Jules Boscq had multi-point nights. 

The most-recent meeting was last weekend, a three-game set in Iowa. Iowa dropped the first two games, but responded with a four-goal output and 24 saves from William Rousseau to best the Wings, 4-1.

All-time Series

The Heartlanders own an record of 18-9-6-3 against the Wings, meaning each team has won 18 games in the all-time series.

Last year, the Heartlanders played the Wings eleven times and went 6-3-1-1 in the season series. 

In the 2022-23 season, Iowa went 6-2-2-1 against the Wings.

 

In the inaugural season, the Heartlanders went 4-3-3-0 against Kalamazoo.

This year’s eight matchups is the fewest the teams have faced off in a single season.
