Road trip nearing end, two games to go at Rapid City

Rapid City, SD – The Iowa Heartlanders (31-18-6-4, 72 points) play their ninth straight road game and visit the Rapid City Rush (25-24-6-3, 59 points) Friday at 8:00 p.m. 

Iowa has least a point in six of the first eight games of the road trip (3-2-2-1).  Thursday, the Heartlanders fought back from a one-goal third-period deficit, tied it in the final half of the third, and got a point in a 4-3 overtime loss. Zach Dubinsky tied the game with eight minutes to go in the game on the power play. Iowa has seven power-play goals in the last four games.

Yuki Muira scored twice in defeat.

The Heartlanders are third in the Central Division. The Rush are sixth in the Central Division.

Season Series

The Heartlanders and Rush are in the second of three games this season; the finale of the series is Saturday at 8:00 p.m. 

Iowa and Rapid City have played in three of the four years Iowa has existed. The clubs played three games in the 2021-22 season and five times in the 2023-24 season. 

The Heartlanders have 20 out-of-division games this season. After Friday’s contest, Iowa has one game left vs. the Rush, one against Wichita and three against Norfolk. Iowa is 7-4-3-0 against out-of-division foes this campaign.

Coaching comparison

Iowa Head Coach Derek Damon and Rapid City Head Coach Scott Burt are each former ECHL players that earned their first pro head coaching opportunities with their respective clubs. Damon is in his third full season as Iowa Head Coach, played 14 professional seasons and started his pro coaching journey as an assistant with Iowa in the 2021-22 inaugural season.

Burt is in his fourth full season as Rush Head Coach and played parts of 14 pro seasons in the ECHL. He is one of nine individuals ever to win three Kelly Cups (all as a player). Burt led the Rush to their second-ever Kelly Cup Playoffs in 2021-22 and helped the team hit the 36-win mark for the second time in Rapid City’s ECHL tenure.
