Heartlanders drop to Cincinnati, 4-2

Coralville, Iowa – The Iowa Heartlanders were defeated, 4-2, by the Cincinnati Cyclones Wednesday at Xtream Arena. Will Calverley and Matthew Sop were Iowa’s goal scorers. Sop has recorded points in back-to-back games and has earned four points in his last four performances. Cincinnati earned the victory with four unanswered goals in the final two periods. William Rousseau made 30 saves in the defeat.

Calverley opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period, notching a power-play goal from the left face-off circle. Mike Koster and Sop were credited with the assists.

Sop then extended the lead to 2-0, tucking a rebound behind the skates of Vyacheslav Peksa 1:21 into the middle frame, assisted by Keltie Jeri-Leon and T.J. Walsh. 

At 8:02 of the second period, Ryan McCleary cut Iowa’s lead to 2-1, touching twine behind the glove of Rousseau. Justin Vaive tied the game at two with a power-play goal seven minutes later. 

Two minutes into the third period, Mathieu Gosselin scored the go-ahead goal for Cincinnati and made it 3-2. Remy Parker cemented the Cyclones victory with a power-play goal in the final six seconds of the closing frame. 

Peksa made 33 saves for the victory.
