Heartlanders nearly complete comeback, fall 5-4 to Tulsa
Coralville, Iowa — The Iowa Heartlanders dropped to the Tulsa Oilers, 5-4, Sunday at Xtream Arena. Oilers forward Josh Nelson scored the game-winner short-handed with 4:22 remaining in the third period. Iowa forward Jaxon Nelson put up two goals and an assist and is tied for the league lead in assists (4) and points (6). Iowa put up 51 shots on goal, tying a team record for shots in a game.
 
The Heartlanders are 2-1-0-0 to start the season, their best start to a season in team history.
 
William Rousseau laced up for his second start of the season, making 19 saves. Tulsa goaltender Tomas Suchanek got his first start of the season, stopping 47 shots for an Oilers victory.
 
The Oilers opened the goal scoring 19 seconds into the game, as Tulsa forward Jaxsen Weibe scored on a penalty shot. A little over a minute later, Tyrell Goulbourne sent a cross-crease pass to Easton Armstrong, who tapped in the Oilers' second goal of the game 1:28 into the first period. Tulsa’s Adam McMaster added the Oilers’ third goal of the game 11:50 into the second period.
 
Iowa answered back with a power-play goal exactly a minute later. Jaxon Nelson potted a one-timer from Keltie Jeri-Leon, his first with the Heartlanders.
 
Jaxon Nelson brought the Heartlanders back within one, 3-2, with a power-play goal 3:47 into the third period. Oilers forward Josh Nelson answered back with a breakaway goal a minute later, re-extending the Tulsa lead to two. Iowa once again cut the lead down to one; Heartlanders alternate captain Yuki Miura got in close and tucked a goal past Suchanek 6:32 into the third period. Tulsa scored a short-handed goal in the final five minutes from Josh Nelson to make it 5-3.
 
Iowa’s Jack O’Brien scored in the final minute of play, but the Heartlanders could not get another. Iowa finished the game with 20 shots in the third period.
 
The Heartlanders visit Kalamazoo and start a back-to-back next Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
 
Iowa is next at home for three games against Fort Wayne Oct. 29, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The Nov. 1 game against Fort Wayne is Honoring All Heroes Night, pres. by Great Clips.
