Behind the lens with Photographer Jason Rubin

Our Official Team Photographer Jason Rubin (@JMRImages) has been at every home game to capture the exciting action of Iowa Heartlanders Hockey.

Here are some of Jason's favorite photos from the 2023-24 season and the art behind taking a hockey photograph.

Photo 1: Capturing Coach

photo1-damon-65f8bcf894101.jpg

This photo was taken on November 17, 2023, after the Heartlanders shut out the Utah Grizzlies in the middle of a three-game streak. A moment of joy, obviously shown by the sizeable grin on Coach Derek Damon’s face. Rushing back towards the locker room after a win, this is how I was greeted upon entering. I had the camera on the ready as I walked through the door. It’s always nice to be able to grab these behind-the-scenes moments that the fans don’t get to witness.

Photo 2: A Little Snow Shower For Ya

This photo was taken on December 12, 2023, in the middle of a three-game series against the Ft. Wayne Komets. While capturing the action on the ice is pretty common when photographing hockey, this shot shows the energy and focus of the players. Yuki Miura is honed in on the puck, while Komets defenseman Connor Corcoran gets snowed by Yuki.

Photo 3: All in the Details

A shot taken during warmups at the beginning of the season, when the Heartlanders hosted the Rapid City Rush. Equipment Manager, Greg Angus, replaces a goalie’s blade. This shot brings you in on a little bit of some of the things that occur on the bench. Sometimes it’s just documenting the details that make a good shot.

Photo 4: Up close and personal

A shot taken at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on January 26, 2024. While photographing a road game for the Heartlanders against the Indy Fuel, I had the opportunity to capture shots at different angles, unable to obtain on our home ice. This shot was taken while shooting from the media box between the players’ respective benches. This photo brings the viewer in, making them feel like they’re sitting on the bench with the team. It makes you wonder what the players are focused on at this moment, as they stare out onto the ice.

Photo 5: The joy of winning

Taken on November 11, 2023, forward Maxim Cajkovic celebrates in the locker room after a three-game sweep against the Kalamazoo WIngs. Another behind-the-scenes shot taken shortly after entering the locker room, again, bringing the fans in to celebrate with the team. The sheer joy on Maxim’s face shows just a fraction of the energy that was in the locker room that evening.
